Artists for Artists: Pratt Alumni Make New York City a Nexus of Creative Support
Pratt has always been an incubator for artists and creative practitioners, providing a dedicated environment for experimentation, exploration, and self-definition. But as every student learns, maintaining a practice can be challenging, especially as cohorts disperse and resources become more diffused beyond campus. Pratt alumni Simon Liu, MFA Painting ’83; Ben Fino-Radin, MSILS and MFA Digital Arts ’14; and Jenni Crain, BFA Fine Arts (Sculpture) ’13, have put their creative abilities to work building businesses that provide much-needed support to the ever-expanding artistic community of New York City.
Their experiences show that technique is only one part of an artist’s education: Creative thinking and the ability to engage and activate a community are equally important tools. By identifying opportunities to support the creative community, these three Pratt alumni exemplify an axiom to which their counterparts in architecture might relate: With a strong foundation, imagination is the only limit.
