The Juliana Curran Terian Design Center Pavilion was named winner of the 2010 Building Brooklyn Award in the education category by the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce. The annual Building Brooklyn Awards recognize completed construction and renovated projects that enrich Brooklyn’s neighborhood and economy. The awards will be presented on Thursday, July 15, at Stage 6 at Steiner Studios in the Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The 6,000-square-foot Juliana Curran Terian Design Center Pavilion was designed by hanrahanMeyers Architects and dedicated in March 2007 in honor of Pratt Trustee Juliana Terian Gilbert, who donated $5 million to make construction of the building possible. The building’s form embodies Pratt’s focus on integrative learning and research as it connects two older loft buildings with a contemporary bridging structure to consolidate Pratt’s four distinct design programs: interior, fashion, industrial, and communications design into a unified setting where faculty and students teach, work, and learn from one another. Pratt School of Architecture Dean Tom Hanrahan and his partner, Victoria Meyers, were the project architects.

“The Juliana Curran Terian Design Center Pavilion celebrates collaborative thinking, fosters creativity, and positions the Institute at the forefront of innovative design education,” said Pratt President Thomas F. Schutte.

An independent, 10-member panel of Brooklyn-based architects, planners, economic development experts, and city officials judged nominated projects on a specific set of criteria, including design excellence, positive economic impact, enhancing neighborhood services and amenities, context to the surrounding community, and sustainability.

“I want to congratulate Dr. Schutte and Pratt Institute on this award, ” said Brooklyn Chamber President and CEO Carl Hum. “In many ways the Juliana Curran Terian Design Center Pavilion at Pratt honors what Brooklyn now represents – the perfect union between the traditional and the new. The result in this case is a wonderful bit of architecture that will be enjoyed by generations of Pratt students and Brooklynites,” he added.
